Orica’s application to export the huge volumes of hexachlorobenzene (HCB) waste for destruction in Germany will bring relief to the many residents of Kingsford Smith who have lived with this highly toxic substance being stored near their homes for many years.
Whilst the international framework for the disposal of toxic wastes makes clear that it is preferable that there be on-site disposal, in this case considering the lack of success in finding any alternative sites for disposal and given the large volume of waste stored (22,000 tonnes) it is urgent that it be safely treated. As a consequence Orica’s application should be given due consideration.
