Media release: A deadly night at the Opera House

Peter Garrett MP
Member for Kingsford Smith
Shadow Parliamentary Secretary for Reconciliation and the Arts

I warmly congratulate all the winners at the 12th Annual Deadly Awards, held last night at the Sydney Opera House.

The ‘Deadlys’ celebrate the success of talented Indigenous Australians in the areas of the arts, sport and community.

The list of nominees was drawn from well-known Indigenous identities as well as new and emerging performers, sporting identities and community workers.

Winners included Stan Grant Sr for his work in preserving Indigenous language, the visual artist Gulumbu Yunupingu, AFL Superstar Adam Goodes and the multi-nominated Troy Cassar-Daley who was named artist of the year.

The presence of long time Indigenous music stalwarts the Pigram Brothers from Broome was particularly ‘deadly’.

The calibre of nominees for this year’s Deadly Awards reflects the real depth of talent within the Indigenous community and recognises the significant cultural, sporting and community contribution made by Indigenous Australians.
