This weekend marks the one year anniversary of Wave of Respect – a statement in response to the events at Cronulla and Maroubra last year, calling on all members of the community to actively work to stop any form of violence.
One year on and the message remains the same: in our diverse society there is room for everyone as long as we are law-abiding, tolerant, respectful and non-violent.
The statement, presented at Dunningham Reserve, Coogee, was signed by a number of prominent Australian actors and local sporting and political identities, making clear the behaviour we witnessed last year was damaging the harmonious community relations that have characterised Australia.
The principles supported in the statement remain critical to a peaceful, integrated Australia:

- Respect for the rights of others,
- Respect for the rights of everyone to go about their lives in a peaceful way – A wave of respect.
