Media release: Howard Government’s nuclear future - 25 nuclear reactors and nuclear waste dumps

04 June 2007

Peter Garrett MP
Member for Kingsford Smith
Shadow Minister for Climate Change, Environment and Heritage

The Howard Government has revealed its plan to transform Australia into the world’s nuclear waste dumping ground.

Every single delegate at yesterday’s Liberal Party Federal Council meeting called on Australia to embrace “nuclear power generation and worldwide nuclear waste storage in the geotechnically stable and remote areas that Australia has to offer.”

This is the Prime Minister’s vision for Australia’s future – 25 nuclear reactors dotted around Australia, and dozens of nuclear waste dumps, filled with toxic radioactive waste.

And every one of those 25 nuclear reactor plants will be a nuclear waste dump.

Federal Industry Minister Ian Macfarlane yesterday admitted that every nuclear reactor will store nuclear waste for “the first 30, maybe 40 years” of its operation.

The Howard Government will now begin the search for “geotechnically stable and remote areas” of South Australia, Western Australia and the Northern Territory suitable for a global nuclear waste dump.

Mr Howard must come clean and tell Australians where he will locate his reactors, his nuclear waste dumps and his global nuclear waste facility.

Already more than one in four of John Howard’s MPs (23 of 87) oppose the construction of a nuclear reactor in their electorate. (see attached)

The Howard Government can’t have it both ways. If its MPs commit to a nuclear future, they must commit to building nuclear reactors and waste dumps in their own electorates – whatever their margin.
