Lighting represents around 12 per cent of greenhouse gas emissions from households.
-
Electricity used for lighting an average Austrlaian home generates around 750 kilograms of greenhouse gas and costs around $100 a year.
- Flourescent lamps cut greenhouse gas emissions and running costs by 75 per cent. Australia is phasing out inefficient incandescent light bulbs and replacing them with efficient lighting technology such as compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs).
-
Over its life, a typical CFL saves around 333 kilograms of greenhouse gas and $45. It also saves the cost of six or more incandescent globes.
-
Modern dimmer controls reduce greenhouse gas emissions because they can reduce light output. They also extend lamp life. Dimmer controls can now be used with some CFLs (but check the label first).
