Federal Member for Kingsford Smith
Minister for Environment Protection, Heritage and the Arts
The Federal Member for Kingsford Smith, Peter Garrett, today welcomed funding of more $1 million to continue delivering services to Kingsford Smith teenagers with disabilities.
Maroubra-based Eastern Respite and Recreation will be funded over three years under the Gillard Labor Government’s Outside School Hours Care for Teenagers with Disability program.
During a visit to an Alexandria gym Mr Garrett met with local teenagers with disabilities who, thanks to this program, get the opportunity participate in activities that they might not otherwise experience.
Mr Garrett said this program meets the needs of families with teenagers who have special requirements.
“Parents and carers of teenagers with disabilities often can’t find appropriate care as many traditional before and after school care services only cater for primary school children,” Mr Garrett said.
“The services provided by groups like Eastern Respite and Recreation are a life saver for parents who want to be sure that their children are getting the best care while they are taking a much-needed break from their caring responsibilities.
“This extra time helps reduce the stress and difficulties that these families often experience and I am delighted that this $1 million funding boost will see it continue.”
Eastern Respite and Recreation CEO, Greg Bergan, confirmed that the federal funding was a boon to local teenagers and their families.
“Eastern Respite and Recreation’s Teen Program not only provides much needed family support but it also allows teenagers with disabilities to develop invaluable social skills and friendships in everyday settings” said Mr Bergan.
The Gillard Labor Government is committed to delivering a range of support to people with disabilities and their families.
